Description
Summary:eng: The Cistercian abbey Wilhering near Linz (Upper Austria) was founded by monks of Rein near Graz in 1146. During the first two centuries only the Gregorian chant was cultivated according to the monastic rules. In 1355 the first organ was built in the abbey church. At the end of the 14th century some monks studied at the new University of Vienna, from where new influence came to the monastery school and to liturgical music. In the time of reformation the musical service broke down. At the beginning of the 17th century the monastic discipline was restored. New compositions and voices and instruments were bought. The composer Paul Peuerl built a new organ in 1691. In 1733 the monastery was destroyed by fire. After that the famous rococo-church was built. Nik. Rummel and Joh. I. Egedacher (?) built organs, new instruments were also bought. During the period of Josephinism the service of music was extensively reduced. The monastic office was sung in common not until 1850. The teachers of elementary school were organists and masters of the choir, some of them were also composers. Anton Bruckner spent his holidays at Wilhering several times and dedicated his hymn 'Iam lucis orto sidere' to the abbot. Leop. Breinbauer built a new organ in 1884. The school of the boys' choir was changed into a grammar school in 1895. After oppression by the National Socialists in 1941 the monastery could be restored in 1945.
