ger: Die Arbeit untersucht das Studium der Ethnologie, Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie, das in Österreich als Studienrichtung Völkerkunde an der Universität Wien eingerichtet ist. Es wer-den zuerst Fragen des Studiums analysiert, dem eine Untersuchung der Ergebnisse des Ethno-logiestudiums im praktischen Einsatz, d.h. im Arbeitsleben folgt. Die angewandten Methoden der Studie sind in erster Linie sekundärstatistische Analysen aus Datenbeständen der Universitätsverwaltung, Ergebnisse der amtlichen Statistik, Erhebungen unter StudienanfängerInnen und AbsoventInnen sowie der Volkszählungen. Eine empirische Erhebung zur Berufstätigkeit von AbsolventInnen des Ethnologiestudiums ergänzt diese Dar-stellungen. Die soziale Herkunft der Studierenden der Ethnologie ist durch eine überdurchschnittlich ho-he Bildungsaffinität gekennzeichnet, gleichzeitig ist die Zahl von Studierenden mit diskonti-nuierlich verlaufenden Bildungskarrieren in diesem Fach überdurchschnittlich hoch. Die Zahl der Studierenden in diesem Fach ist in den letzten Jahrzehnten stark angestiegen. Die resultierende Zunahme der Zahl absolvierter Kultur- und SozialanthropologInnen führte u.a. zu einer Neupositionierung des Faches durch die Integration verschiedener Anwendungs-kontexte. Indikatoren wie Arbeitslosenquoten, Erwerbsquoten und eine relativ hohe Selb-ständigenquote, die auf prekäre Arbeitsbedingungen verweisen kann, zeigen die Schwierig-keiten der Integration von AbsolventInnen dieses Studiums in den Arbeitsmarkt zu Beginn der 1990er Jahre, die in der Folge teilweise überwunden wurden. Die beruflichen Einsatzgebiete der AbsolventInnen sind breit gestreut. Eine Analyse der im Ethnologiestudium vermittelten Kompetenzen zeigt, dass die Ergebnisse des Studiums in ho-hem Ausmaß beruflich eingesetzt werden können, und zwar sowohl in Berufstätigkeiten, die - vorab - als fachnahe, als auch in solchen, die als fachfern charakterisiert werden können.

eng: The survey analyses the study programme "Social and Cultural Anthropology" at the University of Vienna, Austria. In a first step, issues pertaining to the study programme are analysed, followed by an exploration of what the knowledge acquired within this study programme means in practical working life. The methods used in this study rely primarily on data from the university administra-tion, official statistics, results from surveys among study entrants and graduates as well as of national censuses. An empirical survey on the professions actually prac-tised by graduates of this study programme is to round off the present study. The social background of students of social and cultural anthropology is character-ised by an above average affinity to education; at the same time, the number of stu-dents with a pronouncedly discontinuous career of education and training also is above average in this discipline. The number of students in this study programme has grown considerably in recent years. The resulting increase of graduates in social and cultural anthropology has caused a re-orientation of the discipline through integration of various contexts of ap-plication. Indicators such as unemployment rates, labour force participation rates, and a relatively high rate of self-employment, which suggest precarious working con-ditions, illustrate how difficult it was, at the beginning of the 1990's, to integrate graduates of the study programme into the labour market; the situation improved somewhat in the following years. The professions graduates work in vary greatly. An analysis of the competencies ac-quired during the study of social and cultural anthropology shows that the experi-ences gained can be used in a wide range of professional activities, both closely re-lated to or loosely associated with the discipline.
