eng: Within ethnology, there is a discussion if cannibalism in the form described for centuries has existed at all. Source-critical studies conducted over the past twenty years have caused serious doubt on the credibility of relevant reports by discovers, missionaries and expeditioners. Based on this knowledge this thesis has concentrated on presenting the discourse on cannibalism existing within the scientific history of ethnology by means of an exemplary selection of authors (Michel de Montaigne, Johann Gottfried Herder, Georg Forster, Adolf Bastian Leo Frobenius, Ewald Volhard). Because of their egalitarian view of mankind the authors of the Enlightenment are shown to take fundamentally different approaches to this phenomenon than those of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The forms of representation of cannibalism are relatively unspectacular with Herder and Forster compared to those of Bastian and Volhard which due to their defamatory character show the authors' clearly disrespectful attitudes towards their research 'objects'.
