Grundlage der Dissertation bilden Asads Veröffentlichungen in der Kölnischen Zeitung, die er als Nahost-Korrespondent zwischen 1927 und 1932 überwiegend in Arabien verfasst hat. Im Anschluss an eine biografische Skizze werden in der Einleitung Quellen, Zielsetzungen und Methode erläutert, bevor Textgattungen, Inhalte und Entstehungszeit der Beiträge sowie stilistische Charakteristika der Reiseberichte umrissen werden. Das zweite Kapitel führt in die politischen und religiösen Verhältnisse ein, auf welche Asad damals in Arabien traf und enthält eine Übersicht über die wahhabitische Bewegung und die Machtenfaltung der Al Saud. In Kapitel 3 wird die Periode von Asads Aufbruch von Europa Anfang 1927 bis zu seinem ersten Zusammentreffen mit dem saudischen Staatsgründer Abd al-Aziz Al Saud rekonstruiert. Mit einer vergleichenden quellenkritischen Analyse von Reiseberichten der Jahre 1927 und 1928 aus ethnologischer Sicht bildet Kapitel 4 den Hauptteil. Aus der Gegenüberstellung von Asads Berichten mit jenen anderer Reisender hat sich gezeigt, dass Asads Angaben als verlässlich und als wertvolle Quelle zur Ethnografie und Sozialgeschichte des von ihm bereisten Raumes zu bewerten sind. Im fünften Kapitel werden biografische Aspekte, wie Asads soziale Bezüge zur saudisch-wahhabitischen Gesellschaft sowie seine Rolle als Berater des saudischen Herrschers erörtert. Der Anhang enthält neben dem Literaturverzeichnis und einer biografischen Tafel gesondert bibliografierte Veröffentlichungen über Weiss/Asad als auch eine Bibliografie seiner journalistischen Arbeiten der Jahre von 1927 bis 1932.<br /> eng: The central figure of the thesis is the Jewish-born convert to Islam, journalist, Islamic scholar, translator of the Quran, and Pakistans Minister Plenipotentiary to the United Nations in 1952, Leopold Weiss alias Muhammad Asad (19001992). The basic material of the thesis is formed by Asads publications in the Kölnische Zeitung, which he wrote as a Middle East correspondent mainly in Arabia between 1927 and 1932. The introduction starts with a biografical sketch and outlines the sources, objectives, and methods of the thesis before comments on the text types, contents, and chronology as well as on the style of the examined articles are rendered. The second chapter introduces to the specific political and religious situation which Asad was confronted with in Arabia. Chapter 3 reconstructs the period of Asads departure from Europe in early 1927 to his first meeting with King Abd al-Aziz Al Saud. Chapter 4 contains an ethnographic, source critcial analysis of a selection of Asads writings from 1927 and 1928.<br />By comparing Asads articles for the Kölnische Zeitung with reports by other travellers it proofed, that his statements are reliable and a valuable source for the ethnography and social history of the visited aeras. Chapter 5 discusses biographical aspects like Asads social ties in Arabia and his status as a member of the inner circle of the ruler.<br />Additionally to a general bibliography and a biographical chronology, the appendix contains a bibliography of publication on Weiss/Asad as well as a bibliography of Weiss/Asads writings from 1927 to 1932.
