The second chapter of the Pramanavarttika discusses the Buddha's authority as a means of valid cognition. In this chapter, Dharmakirti focuses on the Buddha as the knower of the four noble truths, not an omniscient being in its literal sense. In his commentary on this chapter, however, Prajnakaragupta emphasizes the Buddha's omniscience, his knowledge of everything including radically inaccessible matters, as being the ultimate means of valid cognition; one can say that omniscience is the key concept for understanding Prajnakaragupta's commentary on this chapter. The present thesis aims to clarify Prajnakaragupta's idea of omniscience on the basis of the Sanskrit text editions of the Pranavarttikalamkarabhasya ad PV II 8-10 and 29-33 and their annotated translations. In spite of its significance in the Buddhist epistemological tradition, because of the lack of a reliable critical edition, the PVABh has been little studied. I have therefore attempted to present a critical edition of the above two sections, which relate to the refutation of God's omniscience and the establishment of that of the Buddha, by using a Sanskrit manuscript that was recently published and other available materials. Following the edition, I have provided an annotated translation. In the introduction of this thesis, following points are examined: (1) the concepts of pramana and sarvajna in the relevant passages in PVABh ad PV II 1-7; (2) a historical background and influence of Prajnakaragupta's criticism of the omniscience of God; (3) the omniscience as a special mental cognition ; and (4) the Buddhist proof of the omniscience of the Buddha.
