eng: This paper aims to discuss the problem of cultural and religious continuity in the territory of Ancient Etruria, trying to find an explanation based on the political and economic continuity. The paper is divided into three parts, a geographical introduction, the presentation of 11 concrete examples and a general part about continuity of the economy and the administration in Etruria. The 11 examples are situated along the hypothetical line of the rivers Arno and Tiber, the Eastern limit of the Etruscan territory, where in Ancient times temples and in Medieval times churches and monasteries had both the functions of border sanctuaries and of economic control centres. The political presence of the Pope in Tuscany, Umbria and Latium from the end of the 8 century A.
C. on brought the foundation of churches and monasteries in territories of great strategic and economic importance and that's why very often churches were built near or inside Ancient temples. Surely the main goal of the foundation of sanctuaries in Etruscan and Christian times was not only a religious one and we can speak often about the sacralisation of places of economic and strategic importance. |
