A rescue-excavation had to be organized because there was already an exceptional site known at Spielberg/Pielamuend (VB Melk). The excavation could be done in 1969 and was finished in 1970. The site was situated at a plain area on the top of a small rocky hill, which is bordered at the eastern side from the river Pielach and at the northern side from the river Danube. Only from the south this hilltop-settlement could be reached without any problems. The earliest settlement was proved (established) in the Middle-Neolithic period (Lengyel culture). The following horizon of this settlement represented the older Eneolithic period. The ceramics allowed a typological analysis that dated it in the phase A2 of the Moravian- Austrian Baalberger group. Some kidney-shaped loom weights represent connections to the Lagozza culture or the Pfyn-Altheim group etc. The largest settlement was known from the younger Eneolithic period. In the Jevigovice culture a lot of pits, some postholes, one hut construction and two ditches were built. The last ones could be in function for a very short time only because they were refilled soon. The typological analysis from the ceramics surprised because there existed vessel-types that could not be classified whether into the older nor into the younger Jevigovice culture. For that reason a new phase 'Fazies Spielberg' situated between the older and the younger horizon of the Jevisovice culture - was postulated. In the Early Bronze Age there was placed a little necropolis with 34 burials from the Unterwoelblinger culture-group at this area. Further settlements were documented from the Hallstatt culture and the Roman period. Finally we could say that the site was located on an exceptional topographic place at the rivers Pielach and Danube. This hilltop-settlement tempted over a long period of time a lot of cultures to settle down. Within this paper mainly the Eneolithic periods are worked out because of their exceptional findings.
