Description
Summary:eng: Archaeozoological investigations on mammals from Schanzberg near Thunau am Kamp (Lower Austria) are presented. The Schanzberg encompasses fortified areas from the Urnfield period and from the Early Middle ages. The remains of domestic mammals dominate over the wild animals in both faunas. Cattle are the most common element of both faunas. Pigs were the second most important source of meat. The Urnfield settlers kept sheep and goat for meat, while the Slaws kept them especially for wool and milk. During the Slawic period, horses were used as riding and working animals; they along with dogs were not eaten. In the Urnfield period both species were slaughtered. The most frequently hunted animals were red deer and wild boar, followed by the roe deer.
