In this thesis two cemeteries are analysed: the "Palace Necropolis" of stratum d/1 and the older preceding cemetery of stratum d/2 (Phases H and G/4, which equal the late 12th and the early 13th Dynasty, appr. 1820-1750 BC). These are the oldest cemeteries discovered to date at the site of Tell el-Dab'a in the North-eastern Nile-Delta of Egypt, which is now generally acknowledged to be ancient Avaris, the capital of Egypt in the Hyksos period. The layout of the cemetery, the architecture of the tombs, primarily of mud-brick, as well as their contents, in particular the statuary, the jewellery, the weaponry and the pottery are presented and both Egyptian and Near Eastern parallels for the various features and goods discovered are discussed. Based on various non-Egyptian features of the funerary culture, such as the highly contracted position of some of the buried bodies, the exclusive use of Near Eastern (Levantine) types of weaponry as tomb goods and the discovery of donkey burials in front of the tomb entrances, it is clear that the people buried in these tombs were not Egyptians, but 'Asiatics' of Near Eastern, presumably Levantine origin. While the cemetery of str. d/2 seems to have included a wide social spectrum of society, the tombs of str. d/1 reflect a wealthy, local elite. It is clear from the remains of the material culture that this population emulated many, but not all, aspects of late Middle Kingdom elite funerary culture, while integrating some Near Eastern features. Based on a typological study of remains of offering pottery from the superstructures of the tombs (in particular drinking cups and large beer jars) it can be stated that despite major social changes at the site cultic activity continued well into the next str. c.
