520 |a eng: The thesis treats Ligeti's '3 pieces' as a paradigm of late 20th century piano composition, evaluating them analytically from mainly structural but also acoustic, psychological, interpretative, receptive and diachronic perspectives. The starting point is a discussion of the problems of notation as the object of analysis, illustrated by a MIDI- sequencer printout of an recording of 14 bars of Chopin's Sonata Opus 35, 4th movement. This leads to the proposal of a 'Gesamtanalyse', which is defined as an analytical response to the various productive and receptive phases of the composition, performance and reception of a musical work. After further theoretical discussion ('data and interpretation', 'pre- selective analysis'), chapters on acoustical, psychological and performance aspects of the Ligeti pieces follow, laying the foundation for a highly detailed structural analysis. After a discussion of the critical response to the Cologne premiere, there is a chapter on various categories of piano music today and on the role of analysis in the general appraisal of contemporary art music. The ultimate aims are identified as 1) a discussion of the analytical object and the proposal of a 'Gesamtanalyse' 2) an exhaustive account of Ligeti's composition technique in these pieces 3) a positive contribution to the often negative debate on the state of new music at the end of the 20th century.
