ger: Anhand zum Teil eigener Arbeiten wird versucht, eine hypermediale ethnologische Darstellungsweise als holistischen Ansatz einer ethnologischen Wissensrepräsentation zu entwickeln, der aus einem verflochtenen und iterativen Prozess aus Datenaufnahme, Datenanalyse, Darstellung, Publikation und Interaktion besteht. Besonderer Wert soll dabei auf eine zukünftige Weiterverwendbarkeit unter Einbindung fachspezifischer Metadaten und XML-basierten Auszeichnungssprachen gelegt werden. Angestrebt wird ein vernetzter Ansatz, der auch mit hermeneutischen Prinzipien vereinbar ist und wissenschaftlichen Kriterien genügt. Es wird gezeigt, wie verschiedene Medienarten in vernetzter Form in einem Computersystem unter Verwendung von XML (Extensible Markup Language) und wissensbasierten Ansätzen (z. B. Expertensystemen) implementiert werden können. Ausgehend von der These, dass die Darstellungs- und Publikationsmöglichkeiten eng mit der ethnographischen Datenaufnahme verflochten sind, wird versucht, eine Synthese von verschiedenen Medienarten innerhalb eines neuen Gesamtsystems zu erreichen und diese Methode innerhalb der Ethnologie zu einem Prototyp eines wissenschaftlichen Arbeits- und Publikationsmodells zu erweitern.<br />Aufbauend auf XML als eine Art Lingua Franca des Internets wird in Zukunft auch der Entwicklung fachspezifischer Ontologien in den unterschiedlichsten Ausprägungen und Komplexitätsstufen eine wachsende Bedeutung zukommen. Die Verwendung von XML erleichtert nicht nur den Datenaustausch, sondern leistet auch einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Langzeitarchivierung digitaler Daten. Ähnlich wie man vor Jahren von einer HTML Ethnography gesprochen hatte, könnte man in Zukunft von einer XML Ethnography sprechen.<br />

eng: This study attempts to demonstrate how to develop a holistic approach of a hypermedial ethnological scientific presentation by using methods, which have been partly made by the author, consisting of an interlaced and iterative process of data collection, presentation, publication and interaction. Especially emphasised is its future reusability integrating domain specific metadata and XML-based markup languages. The aim is a network-based approach, which should be compatible with hermeneutic principles and meet scientific criteria as well.<br />It shows how different types of media could be implemented in an interconnected manner into a computer system using XML (Extensible Markup Language) and knowledge based approaches (f. e. experts systems). Starting from the thesis that presentation and publication possibilities are closely interconnected with ethnographic data collection, the study will attempt to produce a synthesis of the different types of media within a new overall system and to extend this method; to serve as a prototype of a scientific working and publication model within the field of ethnology.<br />Based on XML as a Lingua Franca of the Internet, the development of domain specific ontologies in different kinds and levels of complexity will become of growing importance in the future. The utilisation of XML simplifies not only data exchange but serves also an important tool in the long-term storage of digital data. In a similar manner several years ago as the discussion was about "HTML Ethnography", the future will then discuss "XML Ethnograpy."
