Summary: | eng: This study attempts to gather and to analyze all available information on Byzantine official documents and letters from the reign of the Emperor Justin II. until the death of Emperor Nicephorus I. which medieval Arabic sources (primarily historiographical and geographical but also other types of sources which contain historical material) provide. For this it takes into account each information about documents which according to Arabic sources in fact or allegedly was written by order of the Byzantine emperor, an official of the empire or an ecclesiastical dignitary. The first part of the work consists of an introduction into the results of earlier research on this theme and the methodological principles which have been taken into account, and presents the different types of sources which concern 1) the period before the rise of Islam 2) the period of the early Arabic conquests and 3) the diplomatic contacts between the Byzantine empire and the Islamic caliphate under the Omayyade dynasty and the early Abbasids. The main part of the work provides the data of the sources in chronological order ('Regesten'). The contents of the sources are quoted in a German paraphrase. At the end of each paraphrase follows a comment which attempts to show each data in the framework of its historical events, to discuss the chronological problems and to decide about the question if the information can be considered as authentically or not. |
