Kintaert, Thomas (DE-588)1203319835 aut <<The>> coordination of musical and scenic elements in the ritual preliminaries (pūrvaranga) of the ancient Indian theatre eingereicht von Thomas Kintaert 2005 IX, 142 Bl. Ill., graph. Darst.
eng: The Natyasastra, attributed to the sage Bharata and compiled around the beginning of the Christian era, is one of the oldest and most fundamental literary sources for nearly all Indian artistic traditions.
The fifth chapter of this encyclopaedic manual of the theatrical arts is devoted to the purvaranga. The purpose of this essentially ritual performance, which consists predominantly of elements of art, was among other things to ensure a flawless presentation of the following play by pleasing and appeasing demons and deities alike.
The thesis consists of three major parts. Part I, serving as a general introduction to the whole purvaranga, contains the first 57 stanzas of the purvaranga chapter together with an English translation and comments. These stanzas mainly enumerate the different limbs of the purvaranga, concisely mention their characteristics and indicate which divine and other supernatural beings are pleased by their performance.
Part II deals systematically with spatial and temporal concepts and their application as found in the Natyasastra, in order to be able to view the description of the purvaranga rituals from a broader perspective. The spatial concepts have been treated extensively, whereas, in the section on temporal concepts, the rhythmical element (tala) of theatrical music has been singled out, since it plays an eminent role in the coordination of musical and scenic elements in the purvaranga. Part III, finally, provides a comprehensive description and interpretation of the first of the scenic purvaranga rituals, the utthapana, and takes into consideration the other (in the Baroda-Edition) 36 chapters, in which numerous references to various aspects of the purvaranga occur. For the first time the focus has been on the precise coordination of the metrical, rhythmic and ritual-scenic elements of the utthapana.
