Description
Summary:eng: Several volumes dating from this period reproduce Viennnese inscriptions. They make it possible for us to complete at least to some extent, our knowledge about historical inscription which is often fragmentary, because of war damage, environmental factors and, last not least, subsequent architectural alterations in baroque style. The most important are: Codex Trautsonianus; Codex Testarello; Codex Gartenschmid; Leopold Fischer, Brevis notitia urbis Vindobonae; Xystus Schier, Epitaphia selecta nonnulla antiquiora Vindobonensia; Matthias Fuhrmann, Altes und Neues Wien; Fuhrmann, Historische Beschreibung; Franz Paul von Smitmer, Collectanea historica Austriaca; Marquard Herrgott, Taphographia Principum Austriae. This dissertation firstly provides informations about biographical data of the authors, all of them ecclesiastics belonging to the Viennese cathedral chapter or some religious order. The second section describes the books dealing with inscriptions. We have to distinguish between printed matter and manuscripts as well as between books dealing only with inscriptions and others including inscriptions among other subjects. The third part is an analysis of the way the different authors used to handle inscriptions, the accuracy of transcriptions (with concrete examples) and the kind and amount of further informations provided (monuments, type of characters, armorial bearings, biographic informations). This papers objective was to check the usefulness of the different publications for epigraphic.
