From the fifties to the eighties professor Eberhard Kranzmayer and professor Maria Hornung, teaching at the University of Vienna, gave out such projects to their students, originally also with the intention to have useful collections for the Woerterbuch der bairischen Mundarten in Oesterreich. Although this dissertation is in keeping the tradition of these theses, it goes its own way. The word material for instance is divided according to the parts of speech. Altogether it is more an analysis and not only a collection. The study is divided in a part of text and in one, in which the material is presented. The text consists of a literary historic part and a linguistic part. In the literary section the eighteenth century's language reform in Austria forms the background for the description of the old Viennese folk theatre's development. The thesis consists of the theory, that Baeuerle although writing in the first half of the nineteenth century can only be understood from the background of the reform in language and theatre in the eighteenth century. The next part is about the life and work of Adolf Baeuerle (1786-1859), who is the primary object of the study. With a detailed text analysis of Baeuerle's play 'Die Fremden in Wien' (1814), which is edited in this dissertation, and reflections on Baeuerle's status in literary histories ends this part. In the linguistic part sections on periods of the Viennese dialect can be found just as such on history and methods of lexicography and the language of Baeuerle. The orthography in his plays is the typical orthography of an author of the first half of the nineteenth century. The orthographic uniformity is, as D. Nerius in a more general context said, a relative one. In his neologisms Baeuerle proves to be less original than Nestroy. The most extensive part of the study contains the material with Baeuerle's vocabulary, divided according to the parts of speech and classified after the local spreading, the niveaus of language (standard, colloquial, dialectal) and after loanwords from foreign languages. The historicocritical edition of Baeuerle's 'Die Fremden in Wien' at the end of the dissertation makes the study valuable also for literary scientists.
