Description
Summary:eng: This dissertation is about the history of the conservatory in Vienna and its predecessors in the first half of the twentieth century. The names of the predecessors are: 'New Viennese Conservatory', 'Viennese People's Conservatory', 'Conservatory for the Cultivation of Folkloristic Music' and 'Music School of the City of Vienna'. Each one of these schools is dealt with in separate parts of the dissertation. Each part considers the historical development of the individual school in connection with social, cultural and political problems and changes, especially World War I and World War II. The individual parts also contain profiles of prominent teachers and surveys of outstanding performances of the schools. The first chapter deals furthermore with the terminology of the word 'conservatory' to show the roots of this definition and its semantic change in the course of the centuries. The last chapter gives a short outlook over the 1950ies and deals with important changes of the curriculum and subjects of the conservatory in this decade. A documentary appendix concludes the dissertation.
