eng: This dissertation deals with the reception of the ancient shepherd god Pan in German 19th and 20th-century literature (with cross-references to important foreign texts). The following aspects are looked into: - Are there any threads of development running through the reception? - Are there any recurring basic concepts? - To which extent does the ancient model occur in modern literature? The dissertation deals with the basic aspects of reception and they are presented in chronological order. Results: Pan keeps resurfacing, in the 19th as well as the 20th century. He appears in many contexts and with various connotations (most of them being present as such in ancient texts). Pan is basically seen as the god of wilderness and as a god with two faces suggesting disharmony, change and volatility. Different attitudes underlie the interest in Pan including archeological, philosophical, poetological and psychological interpretations. For the 19th and 20th century on the one hand the psychological approach is of paramount interest. On the other hand looking into the history of ideas and poetology, playing with a century- old reception which has basically been associated with Pan a pastoral tradition (as in the 17th and 18th century) or omnipresence in philosophical sense (as in the Renaissance) is interesting. Thus this dissertation suggests new approaches to some texts.
