Description
Summary:ger: Recently, wavelet transform reached high impact in research and practice as a basic fundament of image and video processing applications. Wavelet packets, which represent a generalisation of the classical discrete wavelet transform, are in this context highly suited fort he compression of strongly textured images which occur frequently in form of displacement frame differences during the processing of video streams. The first part of this thesis studies the quality improvements of a wavelet packet video coder in comparison to the discrete wavelet transform. In this context we treat several algorithms for the choice of the best wavelet basis, as well as classical and overlapping motion estimation algorithms fort he generation of difference frames. The main goal ist he detection of optimal parameter configurations fort he compression of distinct video sequences. The second part of this work presents parallel algorithms of a wavelet packet video coder on Multiple-Instructions-Multiple-Data (MIMD) architectures. In this context we implement three different types of parallelization granularities and investigate their efficiency with respect to the expected rate/distortion performance as well as parallel execution speedup. Results of several practical experiments document the good efficiency of suchlike parallel applications.
