How do we experience images? To answer this question it is necessary to know what images are: they only develop through a particular form of viewing - more precisely: through a particular thinking in viewing - »image thinking.« This mode of thought is responsible for all kinds of image experience - in receiving and producing images and in the envisioning of »mental images.« In contrast to many theoretical approaches to the image, Goda Plaum's model takes all of these processes of »image thinking« into consideration and shows their inherent connection. In the process, no only is the phenomenon of the image comprehensively elucidated, but also the concept of »image thinking«, mostly traced back to Paul Klee, is for the first time precisely defined. Wie erfahren wir Bilder? Zur Beantwortung dieser Frage muss man wissen, was Bilder sind: Sie entstehen erst durch eine bestimmte Betrachtung - genauer: durch ein bestimmtes Denken in der Betrachtung -, dem »Bildnerischen Denken«. Dieses Denken ist verantwortlich für alle Arten von Bilderfahrung - im Rezipieren und Produzieren von Bildern ebenso wie beim Vorstellen von »mentalen Bildern«.Im Unterschied zu vielen bildwissenschaftlichen Theorien nimmt Goda Plaums Modell des Bildnerischen Denkens alle diese Prozesse in den Blick und zeigt deren inneren Zusammenhang auf. Dadurch wird nicht nur das Phänomen Bild umfassend erklärt, sondern auch der meist auf Paul Klee zurückgeführte Begriff »Bildnerisches Denken« zum ersten Mal präzise definiert.
