Im zweiten Teil erklärt der Autor verschiedene Forschungsansätze, etwa die klassische Schlachtengeschichte, die Sozialgeschichte der Soldaten oder die psychohistorische Erforschung von Kriegserfahrungen. Militärische Phänomene werden in ihrer Wechselwirkung mit gesellschaftlichen und ökonomischen Entwicklungen diskutiert und Strategien der Legitimation von Kriegen in der griechischen und römischen Kultur dargestellt.
