Bei diesem Text handelt es sich formal um einen Antwortbrief des Odysseus auf einen vorangegangenen Brief seiner Gattin Penelope. Es ist unzweifelhaft, dass sich der mittelalterliche Autor hierbei auf den Penelope-Brief bezieht, der in Ovids Heroides die erste Stelle einnimmt. Die Herausgeber haben eine mustergültige Edition geschaffen, durch die der Text voll erschlossen werden kann.
