Ce deuxième tome de la Correspondance générale, qui couvre les années 1793 et 1794, se compose en grande partie de la suite de la brillante série de lettres que Benjamin Constant (1767–1830), courtisan à Brunswick, avait commencée à échanger avec Isabelle de Charrière en Suisse en 1787. Ces lettres, ainsi que celles qu'il adresse à d'autres correspondants (notamment à plusieurs membres de sa famille et à des amis brundwickois) nous permettent de suivre toutes les péripéties de sa vie intellectuelle et sentimentale de cette époque, y compris son amitié avec le publiciste Jakob Mauvillon, son rôle dans les procès militaires de son père, son divorce avec sa première femme Minna von Cramm, son amitié amoureuse avec Charlotte von Hardenberg (qui deviendra sa deuxième femme), sa rupture avec la Cour de Brunswick, son retour en Suisse et le commencement de sa longue liaison avec Germaine de Staël.

This second volume of the Correspondance générale, which covers the years 1793 and 1794, is composed mainly of the continuation of the brilliant series of letters which Benjamin Constant (1767–1830), now a courtier at Brunswick, had begun to exchange with Isabelle de Charrière in Switzerland in 1787. These letters, along with those addressed by Constant to other correspondents, particularly to several members of his family and friends in Brunswick, enable us to follow the events of his intellectual and emotional life at this time, including his friendship with the publicist Jakob Mauvillon, his role in the court-martial affair of his father, his divorce from his first wife Minna von Cramm, his friendship with Charlotte von Hardenberg (later his second wife), his break with the Court of Brunswick, his return to Switzerland and the beginning of his long liaison with Germaine de Staël.
