Rentsch möchte die Frage nach Gott rational-reflexiv und theoretisch-argumentativ zurückgewinnen und den Weg zu einem geklärten, erneuerten Gottesverständnis aufzeigen. Er analysiert verbreitete Missverständnisse der Rede und Praxis mit Bezug auf Gott und entwickelt eine negative philosophische Theologie für die Gegenwart. Anhand der Frage, "Welchen Sinn hat es, von Gott zu reden?" erarbeitet er ein kritisches Transzendenzverständnis nach Aufklärung und Moderne und ein innovatives philosophisches Verständnis der Einzigkeit Gottes, der Gottesbeweise, des Jenseits und der Ewigkeit.
