Wortbildungsmuster werden als zum Lexikon einer Sprache gehörende Regeln betrachtet, die alle für die Verwendung komplexer Wörter notwendigen systematischen syntaktischen, semantischen, morphologischen und phonologischen Informationen enthalten. Im Mittelpunkt stehen semantische Muster, die die Möglichkeiten der semantischen Veränderung der Grundwörter von Derivationen und Komposita beschreiben. Die Beschreibungssprache lehnt sich an Mittel der Prädikatenlogik an. Sie ermöglicht genauere Aussagen über die Bedeutung von Wortbildungen als die in anderen Gesamtdarstellungen üblichen. Dieser semantische Ansatz eröffnet Wege für weitere Untersuchungen der semantischen und begrifflichen Struktur von Wörtern menschlicher Sprachen. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit ist dem analogischen Charakter von Wortbildungsmustern gewidmet. Für die Neuauflage wurde u.a. die neuere Fachliteratur ausgewertet und die Beispielsammlung durch aktuelle Neubildungen ergänzt.
