Sie untersucht zum einen die Innenwelt der Wissenschaft, also die Produktion wissenschaftlichen Wissens, die Praxis der Forschung und ihre institutionellen Strukturen. Zum anderen interessiert sie sich für die Außenbeziehungen der Wissenschaft, ihre Prägung durch die gesellschaftliche Umwelt und ihre Effekte in verschiedenen Anwendungskontexten. Als interdisziplinäres Feld mit Wurzeln in der Wissenschaftsphilosophie, Wissenschaftsgeschichte und Wissenschaftssoziologie ist die Wissenschaftsforschung nicht leicht einzukreisen. Vor diesem Hintergrund versteht sich das vorliegende Lehrbuch als Wegweiser in einem manchmal unübersichtlichen interdisziplinären Gelände. Im ersten Teil werden Grundlagen und Grundbegriffe erläutert. Der zweite Teil sortiert zentrale Forschungsfelder; es geht um Expertise, um das Labor, um die Universität und um die Rolle der Wissenschaft für Innovationprozesse. Der dritte Teil bietet Orientierung in wissenschaftspolitischen Debatten; behandelt werden hier Fragen der Qualität von Forschung, ihre gesellschaftliche Relevanz und ihr Verhältnis zur Öffentlichkeit. Der vierte Teil führt in methodologische Debatten ein, bevor abschließend Erfahrungen aus der Lehrpraxis reflektiert werden.
