The associated volume of plates documents every item in detail, typically with four photographic views. Im vorderasiastisch-arabischen Raum gibt es keine Marmorvorkommen. Syrien, eine der reichsten kaiserlichen Provinzen des Römischen Reiches, hat diesen Mangel durch Importe aus dem Mittelmeerraum kompensiert, sei es in Form ausgearbeiteter Marmorskulpturen, sei es durch Halbfabrikate bzw. Rohlinge, die erst im Lande ihre künstlerische Gestaltung erfuhren. Es fehlte bisher an einer adäquaten Vorlage der Denkmäler. Diese sind für die Klärung des Transfers griechisch-römischer Bildmotive in die lokal-orientalische Kunst jedoch von grundlegender Relevanz. Mit der Rezeption gingen zugleich neue Bedeutungszuweisungen und formale Transformationen einher, die jeweils eine eingehende Betrachtung verlangen.Die hier vorliegenden Ergebnisse resultieren aus einer Vielzahl von Analysen, die die Skulpturen nach gegenständlichen, typologischen, ikonographischen und stilistischen Gesichtspunkten diskutieren und sie soweit wie möglich kontextualisieren. Es entsteht ein fundiertes Bild über die zeitliche und örtliche Verteilung der Marmorskulpturen in jenen Städten, die sich selber gerne als „griechisch“ bezeichneten. Zugleich kommt das doch hohe Maß an kultureller Diversität zum Tragen, am stärksten sichtbar in kultischen Zusammenhängen.Die von den Herausgebern und 16 weiteren Autoren erarbeitete Publikation versammelt die Ergebnisse mehrjähriger, durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft geförderter Untersuchungen zu den bis heute ermittelten griechischen und römischen Rundskulpturen aus dem Großraum Syrien. Der als Katalog gestaltete Text ist entsprechend der Fundorte der Werke nach Regionen und innerhalb dieser nach Städten gegliedert.
