At the beginning of the 19th century, the Austrian Empire was the most remarkable pluralistic organization on the European continent. With the Revolution of 1848–9, Vienna found itself challenged by the winning nation-state model in the rest of Europe. In the second half of the century, military defeats intensified conflicts between nationalities. The First World War was the most tragic outcome of these conflicts. Zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts war das österreichische Kaiserreich die faszinierendste pluralistische Organisation des alten Kontinents. Nach der Revolution 1848/49 gewannen die nationalen Tendenzen des übrigen Europas auch im Kaiserreich an Bedeutung. In der zweiten Hälfte des Jahrhunderts verschärften militärische Niederlagen die Konflikte zwischen Nationalitäten, die im Ersten Weltkrieg mündeten.
