Die byzantinische medizinische Gebrauchsliteratur basiert auf zwei essentiellen Faktoren, Tradition und Innovation. Die in den byzantinischen Quellen zu beobachtende kritische Reflexion traditioneller Überlieferungen vor dem Hintergrund medizinethischer Fragestellungen führte sukzessive zu einer Transformation des medizinischen Denkens, wobei sich der Fokus immer stärker auf ganzheitliche, patientenorientierte und individuell modifizierbare Therapiekonzepte konzentrierte. In diesem Entwicklungsprozess spielte die Rezeption und Rationalisierung iatromagischer Quellen als unkonventionelle Komplementierung bestehender Heilkonzepte eine wesentliche Rolle. Die Analyse diverser iatromagischer Motive, ihr mutmaßlich gräkoägyptischer Ursprung sowie ihre gelegentliche Transformation, aber insbesondere ihre Relevanz für die byzantinische Heilkunde steht im Mittelpunkt vorliegender Untersuchung. Aufgrund ihrer transdisziplinären Orientierung ist diese nicht nur für die Byzantinistik und Medizingeschichte, sondern für eine Vielzahl weiterer Fachdisziplinen von Interesse, und nicht zuletzt auch vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen Polarisierung zwischen ›Schulmedizin‹ und ›Alternativheilkunde‹.
The reception of Greco-Egyptian iatromagic in Byzantine medical practice literature is a culturo-historical phenomenon with multiple meanings. The rational interpretation of unconventional therapeutic concepts stands at the threshold of a transformation thanks to new considerations concerning medical ethics and patient-focused care.
