In der Frühen Neuzeit waren jene beiden Bereiche oft untrennbar miteinander verbunden, wie die vorliegende Studie am Beispiel der Sammlungsinteressen und Protektionspraktiken Cosimo III. de‘ Medicis nachzeichnet. Gärten, Gemäldesammlungen und Pflanzenkataloge sowie die Karrieren und Netzwerke des Malers Bartolomeo Bimbi und des Botanikers Pier Antonio Micheli bilden den Ausgangspunkt der Analysen. Auf Basis zahlreicher oft noch unveröffentlichter Bild- und Textquellen wird ein differenziertes Panorama botanischer Pracht und Gelehrsamkeit zur Zeit der ‚ultimi Medici‘ entworfen, wobei wiederholt die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen großherzoglicher Patronage hinterfragt werden. | ||
