Es entwickelte sich ein dezidiert kritischer Diskurs, der einerseits den Sinn einer Beschäftigung mit der Philosophie grundsätzlich in Frage stellte, andererseits aber auch vor den negativen Folgen von Argumentationskünsten und philosophischen Ideen für das Zusammenleben in der Polis, ihre Werte und Normen warnte. Die Beherrschung des Wortes erschien dann vor allem als geeignetes Mittel, eigenen Interessen - womöglich auf Kosten der Mitbürger - geschickt zum Sieg zu verhelfen. Die Gedanken, die sich die Philosophen zum ‚Göttlichen‘ und seiner Rolle in der Natur machten, galten vielen gar als gefährlich, weil sie mit den traditionellen religiösen Vorstellungen, die nicht zuletzt dem öffentlichen Kult der Polis zugrunde lagen, nicht leicht zu vereinbaren waren. So ungerecht die Kritik zuweilen gewesen sein mag, diente die Diskussion doch zugleich auch der Verständigung darüber, welche Rolle intellektuelle Bildung im Gemeinwesen eigentlich spielen sollte. Die vorliegende Arbeit hat diesen Diskurs erstmals eingehend untersucht. Philosophy and rhetoric became integral elements of Athenian culture. This development was accompanied by a critical discourse that questioned their educational use and warned of its dire consequences for peaceful coexistence in the polis.
