Gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Hannah reiste Paul Tillich von Mai bis Juli 1960 nach Japan. Diese Reise wird nun erstmals detailliert dokumentiert. Ediert werden alle von Tillich in Japan gehaltenen Vorträge und Vorlesungen sowie seine Dialoge mit prominenten Buddhisten in Kyoto. In diversen japanischen Archiven haben sich die im Zusammenhang der Reise geschriebenen Briefe zwischen Tillich und seinen überaus großzügigen Gastgebern finden lassen. In einem ausführlichen „Report“ hat Tillich selbst die These vertreten, dass durch die vielfältigen Erfahrungen in Japan sein Denken über das Verhältnis zwischen dem Christentum und anderen Religionen tiefgreifend verändert worden sei. In der Tat war Tillich von der ihm zunächst so fremden Kultur tief beeindruckt. In einer minutiösen Rekonstruktion von Tillichs dichtem Besuchsprogramm kann Tomoaki Fukai zeigen, dass Tillich ein außergewöhnlich wahrnehmungssensibler Gesprächspartner war und seinen japanischen Gastgebern mit großer Neugier begegnete. Tomoaki Fukai schildert zudem den politischen Kontext von Tillichs offiziellem Besuch und seine touristischen Ausflüge.

In the summer of 1960 Paul Tillich visited Japan. Together with his wife Hannah, he spent eight weeks in the country sightseeing, lecturing, and having discussions with local scholars. This monograph provides the first comprehensive documentation of Tillich’s journey, highlighting the political context and the itinerary of his visit. Moreover, Tomoaki Fukai presents the manuscripts of Tillich’s lectures, his conversations with leading Buddhists in Kyoto, and his correspondence with his Japanese hosts.
