Analog zur Gesamtkonzeption der Reihe umfasst das Handbuch einen sprachsystematischen Teil, in dem Einzelphänomene in den Blick genommen werden: Laut, Gebärde, Buchstabe; Wort und Wortschatz; Satz, Äußerung, Schema; Text und Gespräch; Diskurs. Auch historische und multimodale Zusammenhänge werden berücksichtigt, zugleich das sprachkritische Urteil der Öffentlichkeit. Daneben zielt eine anwendungsbezogene Zugangsweise auf Sprache im konkreten Gebrauch in zentralen gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhängen: Medizin; Recht; Wirtschaft; Organisationen; Naturwissenschaft, Technik und Mathematik; Kunst; Literatur; Religionen; Politik und Gesellschaft; urbaner Raum sowie Bildung. Dabei ist der Zugriff am sprachlichen Phänomen, nicht an disziplinären Zugängen orientiert. Nicht zuletzt dadurch bietet das Handbuch Studierenden, Dozenten und Forschern der Sprachwissenschaften, aber auch sprachlich Interessierten anderer Disziplinen grundlegendes Orientierungswissen.
