Die Komplexität des Phänomens erfordert literatur- und theaterwissenschaftliche sowie kultur- und sozialhistorische Herangehensweisen. Der Band dokumentiert die Beiträge einer internationalen Tagung zum spätmittelalterlichen Fastnachtspiel (Blaubeuren 2007). Germanisten, Romanisten, Niederlandisten sowie Theater- und Kulturhistoriker behandeln Fastnachtspiele unter folgenden Gesichtspunkten: Spielthemen und Stadtpolitik, Performanz und Rezeption, Beziehungen zum geistlichen Schauspiel, zu literarischen und brauchtümlichen Traditionen, ferner Überlieferung, Edition und Kommentierung sowie komparatistische Aspekte. Der Schwerpunkt der hier versammelten Aufsätze liegt auf den Spielen der Nürnberger Tradition; es werden jedoch auch andere Spielgegenden wie der niederdeutsche Sprachbereich, die Schweiz und Tirol sowie vergleichbare Erscheinungsformen aus Frankreich und den Niederlanden behandelt.
