Zentrale Aufgabe der Grundlegung ist die Entwicklung und Begründung eines Moralprinzips; Kant erfüllt diese Aufgabe mit seiner berühmten Lehre vom Kategorischen Imperativ. Auch für professionelle Ethiker der Gegenwart enthält der Text zahlreiche Anknüpfungs- und Abstoßungspunkte. Die Grundlegung ist bereits seit langem das Objekt intensiver Interpretations- und Kommentierungsarbeiten. Die Vielzahl innovativer Forschungen aus den vergangenen 10 bis 20 Jahren zeigt jedoch, dass sich immer noch bedeutende Fortschritte in unserem Verständnis der Schrift erzielen lassen. Gerade im angelsächsischen Sprachraum gibt es wichtige neuere Entwicklungen.
