In mehr als 40 Einzelbeiträgen, von Anger bis Zelt, zeigt der Band, wie die einzelnen Orte im Erzählen sprachlich erzeugt und für den Verlauf des Geschehens funktionalisiert werden. Bei allen erfassten Orten handelt es sich um sprachlich-narrative Konstrukte; in vielen Fällen sind sie zudem Elemente fiktionaler Weltentwürfe. Daher ist die literarhistorische Verortung und die transgenerisch-diachrone Entwicklung der Darstellung und Funktionalisierung der jeweiligen Orte ein weiterer Fokus der Beiträge. Das Handbuch führt jüngere Forschungen auf dem einschlägigen Feld zusammen und präsentiert darüber hinaus neue, eigenständige Analysen. Damit kann es weiterführende Arbeiten zu erzählten Räumen im Mittelalter anregen und erleichtern. Es richtet sich zunächst an Wissenschaftlerinnen, Wissenschaftler und Studierende der germanistischen Mediävistik und benachbarter Disziplinen, bietet aber auch der interessierten Öffentlichkeit anregende Wege durch die mittelalterliche Erzählwelt.
