The objective of this richly illustrated introduction is to explain and demystify the design processes in architecture, urban design, and design. Starting with the five parameters originally established by Peter von Seidlein’s Stuttgart Chair for Building Construction and Design, i.e. grid, function, detail, material, and cost, the art of design leads to their integration in a balanced whole. In the second part of the book the author analyzes in detail the application of these parameters in nine case studies from different periods, in different scales and typologies – from furniture to private and public buildings, through to urban design. The book is intended for students as well as for lay people who wish to participate in the public debate on the built environment.

Ziel der reich illustrierten Einführung ist es, die Entwurfsprozesse in Architektur, Städtebau und Design zu erklären und zu entmystifizieren. Maßgeblich hierfür sind die fünf, ursprünglich an Peter v. Seidleins Stuttgarter Lehrstuhl für Baukonstruktion und Entwerfen etablierten, Parameter Raster, Funktion, Detail, Material und Kosten: Die Kunst des Entwerfens führt zu ihrer Integration in einem ausgeglichenen Ganzen. Der zweite Teil analysiert detailliert die Anwendung dieser Parameter in neun Fallstudien aus verschiedenen Epochen, in unterschiedlichen Maßstäben und Typologien: vom Möbel über private und öffentliche Bauten bis hin zur Stadtplanung. Das Buch richtet sich an Studierende, aber auch Laien, die sich im gesellschaftlichen Diskurs über die gebaute Umwelt zu Wort melden wollen.
