Neben der Energiegewinnung bieten die Module zahlreiche Synergieeffekte, indem sie zunehmend wie Verglasungsbauteile eingesetzt werden und weitere Funktionen wie Witterungs-, Sonnen-, und Sichtschutz übernehmen. Für spezielle Anwendungen stehen Sondermodule wie z.B. Solardachziegel und Solarmembranen zur Verfügung.
