Throughout the world people are face-to-face with quality-of-life crises that seem insurmountable—too many people, too little food, shrinking resources, destruction of the natural environment. If man continues to view his future as he has always seen it, as merely an extension of today, and more importantly, as something over which he has no control, his prospects for survival seem dismal.Hawaii 2000 is a by-product of one community's efforts to confront this grim prospect and to generate feasible alternatives for the future. In 1970 the governor of the state of Hawaii, at the behest of several foresighted citizens, established the Governor's Conference on the Year 2000. The editors note that this marked "the first gathering of hundreds of laymen (rather than academicians) to consider alternative futures for the place where they live and work—and where their children are growing up." Noted futurists, writers, scientists, and planners from throughout the world were invited to help the island community define the problems, outline the questions,·and begin to search for answers. Together, laymen and experts sought to creatively anticipate alternative futures for Hawaii, and to plan for the realization of these futures.Hawaii 2000 is the report of this historic conference. It includes addresses by Arthur C. Clarke, Alvin Toffler, Robert Theobald, Yehezkel Dror, and other noted futurists. It is a heartening and provocative book that tells how the people of one American state began their efforts to design a just, humane, and productive future. It is also a clearly written guidebook providing at least one model for future-oriented people everywhere who seek a way to begin to make their dreams of a better society come true.

It is also a clearly written guidebook providing at least one model for future-oriented people everywhere who seek a way to begin to make their dreams of a better society come true.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="538" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Mode of access: Internet via World Wide Web.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">In English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Description based on online resource; title from PDF title page (publisher's Web site, viewed 02.
