Summary:1.[Thus have de]creed and ordained2.and made inviolable Shahr Hilâl bin3.Yadaʿʾab, King of Qatabâ [ n, and the Qata- ]4.bân ians for Tamnaʿ and Barîm and the tribes of5.the two valleys of Ḥawkam and the children of ʿAmm6.and the landed gentry of Tamnaʿ and the landed gentry of the children of7.ʿAmm: A: That whoever should conduct trade in Tamnaʿ8.and in Barîm, whatever the sort of wares, must issu e a guarantee9.in Tamnaʿ and set up a shop (only) in Shammar. B: And that10.whoever might involve himself with Qatabân with respect to merchandise and11.accumulate goods and property, shall set up his shop and12.accumulate goods and make purchases (only) in Shammar--this with respect to all13.tribes (involved). C : And (that), should a shopkeeper (then) set up a shop14.and initiate transactions, he is free to do business or enter into15.a partnership with any other shop-owner or merchant16.without (the permission of) the magistrate of Shammar. D : And (that) when17.the magistrate of Shammar announces that the18.Qatabânians are to receive guests from the tribes, he (i.e. the merchant hereby freed of obligations towards the magistrate of Shammar) shall19.trade in Tamnaʿ and set up a stall for his merchandise in20.Shammar; and may the Qatabânians ( likewise ) do business21.with those from the tribes. E : And (that) whoever among them22.should announce to the magistrate of Shammar that anyone has sought to23. travel among the Qatabânians with (his) merchandise, to the detriment of24.Qatabân (as a whole) - -(that is), a foreigner among the tribes- - or if an individual has continuously25.(had dealings) against his fellow tribesman in the course of a partnership while they are travel ing,26.let him pay 50 silver pieces27.to the king of Qatabân and the magistrate of Shammar.28.They shall proceed and handle matters (from there).
