Anna McClarmonde Chase
Anna McClarmonde Chase (also
Ann Chase; 1809 – 1874) was an American merchant and spy for the United States during the
Mexican–American War. Born in Ireland, she emigrated to the U.S. in 1824. She spent time in Philadelphia and New Orleans before settling in
Tampico, Mexico, where she was a merchant and lived with her husband, the U.S. consul to Mexico. During the war, she spied on troop movements, spread
disinformation and relayed information to the U.S. Navy. Her information led to the capture of Tampico and she gained the nickname "Heroine of Tampico".
