As part of the project TransHerit, a student group of the Comenius University Bratislava and their supervisor Yazid Ben Hounet visited our institute to attend a lecture by Sandra Guinand. The students learned about the urban planning and city development of Vienna in the Gründerzeit, as well as about the characteristic architecture of the era. Later on, the students received the task of image collection in order to observe and document the different transformation processes in the Gründerzeit housing stock.

By adapting the categories of the states of built structures from the works of Elisabeth Lichtenberger (Lichtenberger, 1990), the ISR Team is developing a categorization system that represents today´s phenomena. With the help of the students, we localized some of the largest deviations from the common strcutures, such as low-rise buildings and (multiple-storey) rooftop extensions. We documented categories of urban decay, rehabilitation and urban renewal in the historical tenement housing stock. This way, we were able to get a more detailed overview about our case study area in the 15th district of Vienna.
