In memoriam: Günther Blobel

Günther Blobel, Nobel Prize laureate and former member of the IMBA SAB, passed away on 18 February at the age of 81.

Günther Blobel’s discovery of how proteins are targeted for delivery to specific locations within the cell earned him the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1999. With his work, he bridged molecular biology and cell biology and contributed to a more holistic understanding of the fundamental cellular mechanisms. He also found that the same system plays a role across all eukaryotes, ranging from yeast to humans. From 2007 - 2012, Günther Blobel was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) at IMBA. He was a remarkably accomplished scientist and an inspiring thinker with a brilliant mind. He will be sorely missed.
