From cell polarity to tissue morphogenesis
Cell polarity is a key determinant of cell growth and division patterns and hence an important regulator of cell shape. However, how cell polarity coordinates morphogenesis at the tissue level is not fully understood. Using the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha, I investigate how cell polarity signalling contributes to the formation of complex plant tissues.
Evolution of cell polarity signalling in plants
All extant multicellular plants evolved from a unicellular algal ancestor. This transition in body plan complexity was likely mediated through the advent of novel cellular mechanisms. I am investigating how cell polarity signalling evolved in plants to assess the impact this may have had on plant body plan evolution.
Research interests
The spatiotemporal coordination of cellular processes such as cell growth, division, and differentiation is essential for plant morphogenesis. I aim to investigate the mechanisms which control these cellular processes, and how these mechanisms evolved.
