The summer school »Arkeoljik Alanda Mimarın Rolü - The role of the architect at archaeological sites« of the Limyra excavation will be held from August 26th to September 1st, 2024. In cooperation with the Limyra excavation and with the support of the İTÜ Geliştirme Vakfı, 15 architecture students from TU Istanbul will be introduced to the range of tasks expected of architects on an archaeological excavation for eight days.
A team from Istanbul University of Technology, led by Zeynep Kuban, will introduce students to the practical documentation of architectural finds and building complexes. First, the students will learn traditional documentation methods using manual measurements and drawings, and then become familiar with the use of modern instruments such as the total station or 3D laser scan. As the requirements in the documentation methodology increase, the tasks will also become more complicated over the course of this summer school. The focus will initially be on learning simpler findings such as walls, but by the end of the week the students should be able to record more complicated building complexes and document them in various ways. This summer, documentation using drones will also be a topic of the summer school.
Another aspect of this training is dealing with the conditions on site, which are also determined by architects, such as the planning of an excavation house, depots for the proper storage of the finds and protective devices for in situ findings. In this way, the students are made familiar with the fact that architecture on an excavation is not limited to the historical documentation of buildings, but also includes practical work.
In addition to this training program, theoretical courses are held in the evenings, such as how to process the data obtained in the various computer programs. This program is supplemented by lectures on various topics given by the director and other members of the excavation team.
