Phenomena of ancient religion such as temples, altars, cult equipment, priests, processions and festivals are usually associated with the Greek polis or the Roman city system, as well as with famous oracle sites such as Delphi or private ceremonies. In contrast, the religious practice at the courts of the Hellenistic kings has received far less attention from modern researchers. This is not surprising insofar as literary sources often provide tendentious information, while archaeological evidence can often hardly be clearly assigned or its function determined. The lecture will present and discuss approaches to this complex topic.
