»Gräber in Kontaktregionen«

Workshop, Vienna

»Gräber in Kontaktregionen. Aussagepotenzial und Methoden bei der Auswertung römerzeitlicher Nekropolen«

The topic of this workshop is the Roman provinces and their neighbouring ›barbarian‹ territories, in which cultural contacts between Roman-Mediterranean and ›local‹ inhabitants become tangible. For this purpose, a period from the 1st to the 5th century is illuminated. The aim is to find out whether and which archaeological and scientific methods can be used to isolate local from »foreign« persons. Provincial borders to the Barbaricum as well as cultural and natural boundaries within the provinces should be taken into account. Furthermore, it remains to be discussed what information historical sources provide with regard to the burial traditions of Roman and non-Roman cultures. Also, the much discussed topic of when an »ethnic interpretation« might apply will be dealt with in the course of the workshop.
