Haim Gitler, Chief Curator of Archaeology and Curator of Numismatics, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem
The lecture will present a die study of the 44 recorded types of the provincial silver coinage of Judah in the late Persian, Macedonian, and early Hellenistic periods. The iconography of the Yehud coin types will examined with comparisons to motifs in Greek, Persian, and ancient Near Eastern art, including other local coinages and sources in Judahite material culture. We will also analyzes data relating to the metrology, quantification record, paleography, metal content, hoard record and circulation of the coinage based on an updated record of coins found in controlled archaeological excavations. Overall, the study attempts to place the Yehud coinage in its historical context and to define its role in the economy of the ancient province of Judah and is based on a book recently published together with Catherine Lorber and Jean-Philippe Fontanille.
