HISTORIC MAP COLLECTION OF THE OeAW ONLINE

Over 380 early historical maps, plans and views from the collections of the Austrian Academy of Sciences are now available online. The new Woldan Collection platform provides access to scanned-in historic map materials that are zoomable, accompanied by extensive curator's notes and may be downloaded for free. Amongst them are unique treasures, such as the 500-year-old Wieder-Woldan Map of the world before Columbus.

Die "Hondius-Weltkarte" wurde 1597 von Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) in Amsterdam herausgegeben. Eine Besonderheit der Karte ist ihre allegorische Ausschmückung, mit der eine politische Intention verfolgt wurde: Mit der Karte wollte Hondius das protestantische gegen das katholische Europa mobilisieren. © ÖAW

Stadtplan Wiens von 1567, herausgegeben von Domenico Zenoi. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Befestigungsanlagen, die seit der Ersten Türkenbelagerung 1529 ausgebaut wurden. Die Bebauung innerhalb der Stadt ist ausgesprochen fantasievoll und die Häuser geben kein reales Bild wieder. © ÖAW

Die Weltkarte aus dem Jahr 1640 stammt von Franz Ritter (1579-1641) aus Nürnberg. Es handelt sich um eine sogenannte „gnomisch projizierte Weltkarte“ mit dem Nordpol als Zentrum. Aufgrund der Kartenprojektion ergeben sich in der Karte beträchtliche Verzerrungen der Landmassen. Fabelwesen, wie Seeungeheuer in den Welmeeren, schmücken die Karte aus. © ÖAW
