Ferromagnetic amorphous/nano-crystalline materials are becoming increasingly important because of their excellent soft magnetic properties. Soft magnetic materials contain 70-85% transition metals (Fe, Co, Ni, etc.) as well as 15-30% metalloids (Si, B, etc.). The unique combination of these elements results in a relatively good glass forming ability leading to an amorphous structure. Additionally, the homogenous glassy microstructure yields to the absence of magneto-crystalline anisotropy, resulting in unique soft magnetic properties.
The project comprises of following objectives:
(i) Optimize new alloy compositions with very good soft ferromagnetic properties (high saturation and low coercively)
(ii) High/commercial purity feedstock material will be used to elucidate the influence of oxygen and other impurities on glass forming ability and magnetic properties.
(iii) Production of amorphous/nano-crystalline ferromagnetic powders using gas atomization (GA) process.
(iv) Identifying the correct annealing parameters to reduce the thermal stress and improve the soft magnetic properties.
