Extracorporal Shock Wave Therapy in Orthopaedics

Over the past 13 years extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has been applied to the treatment of renal calculi.

Since the late 80‘s research has been undertaken on the effects of shock wave application on the musculo-skeletal system and in recent years extracorporeal shock wave therapy has been introduced in the routine treatment of some orthopaedic and surgical indications.

The Aim of this Assessment was to:

  • provide a comprehensive overview of the published literature on the clinical effectiveness of ESWT in orthopaedics in the various indications
  • evaluate – in the light of international experiences (particularly Germany) - the organisational and economic effects of an introduction of ESWT
  • work out policy options for Austria

The Objective of this report was to support policy-makers in their decision-process on whether or not to promote the introduction and dissemination of shock wave therapy.
